1976-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
A Bicentennial silver proof with tripled — not merely doubled — hubbing, the 1976-S Eisenhower Dollar DDO-001 exhibits light triple spread on the date, where three separate hub impressions created two secondary images flanking the primary numerals. Triple hubbing requires three misaligned impressions of the hub into the working die, each slightly offset, producing a more complex layered effect than conventional doubling. Cataloged by VarietyVista, die markers UVC-092 and DMR-007 identify the working die across three stages: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B tentatively in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C tentatively in late die state (unconfirmed). The obverse is classified as ODV-008 and the reverse as RDV-004. As a silver proof, this coin was struck in 40% silver clad composition at the San Francisco Mint, featuring Dennis R. Williams' Liberty Bell superimposed over the Moon on the reverse and the dual date "1776-1976." Frank Gasparro's Eisenhower portrait appears on the obverse. Examine the date numerals under high magnification for the three-layered spread — triple hubbing on a Bicentennial silver proof makes this a distinctive convergence of commemorative issue and die variety.
