Description

The 1976 (S) Proof Silver Eisenhower Dollar is a proof cent struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Bicentennial Coins 1976 series. Total mintage reached 4 million. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left, while the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Designed by Frank Gasparro/Michael Collins & James Cooper. Struck in outer layers - 80% silver, 20% copper; center - 79% copper, 21% silver, weighing 24.6 grams, 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7436. The Eisenhower Dollar honored both President Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 moon landing, combining the two themes on a single coin. The 40% silver blue-pack and brown-pack variants are collected avidly. The 1972 Type 2 (high-relief moon) and various die varieties add interest to this short series.
