About This Coin
The 1976 Eisenhower Dollar (Bicentennial) is a United States cent from the Bicentennial Coins 1976 series. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left, while the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Designed by Frank Gasparro/Michael Collins & James Cooper. 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Eisenhower Dollar honored both President Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 moon landing, combining the two themes on a single coin. It was the last large-size U.S. dollar coin. Business strikes were copper-nickel clad, while special collector editions contained 40% silver. The 40% silver blue-pack and brown-pack variants are collected avidly. The 1972 Type 2 (high-relief moon) and various die varieties add interest to this short series.
