1976 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-002

Description

The 1976-D Washington quarter DDO-002, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse showing a light spread on LIBERTY. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-102 (Wexler writes it FS-25-1976D-102). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a close counterclockwise (CCW) spread pivoting from about 7:00 and visible on LIBERTY. Its obverse marker is a die scratch running southwest to northeast in the field beneath the RU of TRUST; on the reverse, a die scratch heads NNE away from the star under the A in STATES. John A. Wexler submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 2-O-V. VarietyVista credits Chris Pilliod with the report and adds that the variety turns up in Mint Sets. Under its marker codes UVC-1251 and DMR-003 it lists three stages: stage B, with obverse and reverse both in a middle die state, is confirmed, while an early stage A and a late stage C are not yet confirmed.
