About This Coin

The 1976 Washington Quarter (Bicentennial) is a United States cent from the Bicentennial Coins 1976 series — the only year of issue. In 1976, coins were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints with a combined mintage of 1.7 billion. This represents the highest annual mintage in the entire series, above the series median of 543.9 million. The obverse features the standard obverse for each denomination with dual dates 1776-1976 and the reverse displays special reverse designs: Colonial drummer boy (quarter), Independence Hall (half dollar), Liberty Bell and Moon (dollar). Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Collectors have cataloged 21 known die varieties for this date across 6 categories, including atypical die clash, cud, doubled die obverse and 3 other types. Across its variants, estimated values range from $0 to $15 depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $19K in MS69 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by John Flanagan.
