Description

Jack Ahr's Colonial Drummer reverse design, used exclusively on 1976 Bicentennial Washington Quarters, is where this reverse rim cud appears. The Bicentennial quarter replaced the standard heraldic eagle reverse with a specially commissioned design featuring a Colonial drummer boy and a victory torch encircled by thirteen stars, commemorating America's two hundredth anniversary. CU-25c-1976D-03R is the third cataloged reverse cud for the 1976 Denver Mint quarter, where a piece of the reverse die fractured at the rim and broke away, leaving a raised featureless area that obliterates whatever portion of Ahr's commemorative design fell within the break zone. The one-year-only nature of the Bicentennial reverse means that cud varieties on this design cannot occur on any other date, giving them a unique status among Washington Quarter die breaks. Denver Mint produced the majority of circulation Bicentennial quarters, and the heavy production volume generated the die stress that led to rim fractures.
