1974-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003
ErrorDescription
Documented by the Wexler Team as 1974-D 1¢ WRPM-003, this repunched mint mark variety displays a D/D Tilted (Rotated) displacement on a Large Date obverse die and carries one of the most extensively documented die marker profiles among the 1974-D RPM varieties. No cross-references to other attribution services have been established for this entry. The obverse markers are particularly extensive: die scratches run west-northwest through the date and mint mark area, a die scratch extends north-northeast through the interior of the numeral 7, another die scratch runs from the U to the R in TRUST, and multiple concentric die scratches — running predominantly northward — pass through, above, and below the word LIBERTY. Additionally, a die scratch on Lincoln's lapel (which may represent an early-stage die crack) and a north-northwest die scratch in the field in front of Lincoln's nose provide further confirmation points. This dense concentration of obverse die scratches suggests the die may have been subjected to unusual handling, polishing, or reworking during its preparation or service. On the reverse, four distinct die gouges serve as confirming markers: one under the left side of the second A in AMERICA, a strong gouge under the left side of the D in UNITED, a gouge to the right of the dot following UNUM, and a gouge to the right of the T in CENT. The Large Date classification places WRPM-003 alongside WRPM-002 in the larger-numeral date variant group, while WRPM-001 belongs to the Small Date category — a distinction collectors should verify first before proceeding to examine the mint mark area for the repunched impression. The rotational component of the D/D displacement on WRPM-003 — where the secondary impression is tilted rather than simply shifted in a cardinal direction — requires careful examination under magnification, as rotational misalignment can sometimes produce subtler visual cues than a straight north-south or east-west shift.
