1973-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Among the four RPM varieties cataloged for the 1973-S proof Jefferson Nickel, RPM-002 stands out for its die stage progression — rather than beginning in early die state like most varieties in this series, Stage A is unconfirmed, and the earliest documented specimens appear at Stage B with both reverse and obverse surfaces in mid-die state. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. This gap in early die state documentation suggests the variety may have gone undetected until the die had already seen significant use, or that early die state specimens simply have not surfaced in the collecting community. Attributed as UVC-473 and DMR-003, the S/S North displacement follows the same directional pattern as all other 1972-1973 proof nickel RPMs. The northward shift of the corrective punch is visible as residual traces of the original S extending below the final mintmark. Proof Jefferson Nickels of this era were struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel on the San Francisco Mint's dedicated proof presses, with each die hand-punched individually before entering service.
