1973-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-007
Error
Description
Listed by the Wexler Team as 1973-D 1¢ WRPM-007, this variety exhibits a D/D repunched mint mark with the secondary impression displaced to the southeast of the primary "D" placement. The southeast direction indicates that the initial punch impression landed slightly below and to the right of where the final, dominant impression was subsequently placed — or equivalently, that the die was repunched with the second blow shifting the mint mark northwest relative to the first strike. This directional classification is the primary diagnostic for identifying WRPM-007: collectors examining candidate specimens should look for traces of a ghost image or partial serif extending from the lower-right quadrant of the mint mark letter. The Wexler Team notes that only circulated examples have been available for examination, and consequently no strong die markers could be identified on either the obverse or reverse fields. This is noted transparently in the original attribution — wear from circulation obscures the fine die scratches, polish lines, and other microscopic features that typically serve as secondary confirmation points when matching a coin to a specific die variety. Should uncirculated specimens surface in the future, updated die marker data may become available. WRPM-007 is the seventh and final entry in the current Wexler RPM catalog for the 1973-D cent, representing the last documented instance of mint mark misalignment among Denver dies used for this date's production run.
