1972-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

A third repunched mintmark documented for the 1972-S Proof Roosevelt Dime, RPM-003 also shows S/S East displacement but from a different die than RPM-002, as confirmed by its distinct UVC code. Cataloged as UVC-809 and DMR-006, three die stages are noted: Stage A with obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The existence of three separate RPM varieties for a single Proof date underscores how frequently mintmark positioning varied from die to die — even on dies destined to strike collector-grade Proof coins. Each die received its S mintmark by hand from a punch, and the slight eastward offset on this third die produced a distinct variety distinguishable from RPM-002 through its unique die markers despite sharing the same directional classification.
