Description

Second repunched mintmark for the 1972-D cent, RPM-002 shows a D/D Southeast displacement with an unusually complex production history tracked across two distinct UVC/DMR pairings — UVC-964 with DMR-003 and UVC-965 with DMR-004 — indicating this single obverse die was married to at least two different reverse dies during its service life. The first pairing (UVC-964/DMR-003) documents three stages: Stage A with a strong secondary mintmark in early die state accompanied by a die scratch running south from the S of TRUST, a die scratch extending north and east of the 2 in the date, and reverse features including a die crack on column number 11 at mid-die state with a die chip on column 12. The second pairing (UVC-965/DMR-004) picks up in Stage B where the secondary mintmark has weakened to a medium impression at mid-die state, the obverse die scratches have worn away, and a completely new reverse die has been paired — starting in early die state. Stage C progresses to late die state (unconfirmed). The obverse is classified as ODV-027b (MDO) but specifically noted as lacking the die gouge in the upper S of TRUST that characterizes some other ODV-027b specimens — a refinement within the ODV classification that demonstrates the granular level of die identification practiced in the VarietyVista system. The southeast displacement of the secondary mintmark represents a diagonal misplacement combining both southward and eastward components, requiring the engraver to correct in two axes when applying the final positioning punch.
