Cataloged by MadDieClashes under designation TDC-100c-1972D-06, this 1972-D Eisenhower Dollar presents a multi-feature die clash of exceptional clarity. On the obverse, the U of UNUM is clashed through to appear near the E of WE, and the eye clash — where the impression of Liberty's eye transfers to the obverse field — is present in a particularly strong example. On the reverse, the clash left by the underside of Ike's chin and throat area is visible against the eagle design. Die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse impressions of each die's design onto the opposing face. An additional feature makes this coin especially noteworthy: a minor doubled die obverse is also present, visible as notched serifs on the R of LIBERTY. The Eisenhower Dollar, designed by Frank Gasparro and produced from 1971 to 1978, commemorated President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 moon landing. The 1972-D had a Denver Mint production of approximately 92.5 million coins, providing an ample population for variety hunters.
