1971-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Among the earliest Proof Roosevelt Dime RPMs documented, this 1971-S variety shows an S/S West — the S mintmark was punched into the die and then repunched slightly to the west, leaving traces of the initial placement visible alongside the final position. Cataloged as UVC-564 and DMR-009, three die stages have been recorded: Stage A with obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). Repunched mintmarks on Proof coinage are particularly notable because Proof dies received the same hand-punched mintmarks as business strike dies — there was no separate, more careful process for Proof production. The 1971-S Proof Roosevelt Dime was struck at the San Francisco Mint in clad composition as part of the annual Proof set. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt design had been in continuous production since 1946, and S-mint dimes from 1968 onward were struck exclusively as Proofs.
