Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-563 with die marriage reference DMR-008, the 1971-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005 is a proof Roosevelt Dime exhibiting an S/S East repunched mintmark — where the initial S mintmark was positioned west of its intended location, and the corrective second punch placed the final S eastward. This eastward displacement direction matches that of RPM-003 for the same date, but the distinct UVC-563 designation (versus UVC-561 for RPM-003) confirms these are two separate working dies that independently experienced similar eastward misalignment during mintmark application. The die state progression documents Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B as mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C as late die state (unconfirmed). The 1971-S proof Roosevelt Dime was produced at the San Francisco Mint, continuing the proof set tradition that had resumed in 1968. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime with its obverse portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the reverse torch flanked by olive and oak branches. Struck in clad composition (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel outer layers over pure copper) at 2.27 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter, the coin's proof finish provides the mirror-field contrast that facilitates detection of the secondary S impression to the west of the primary. The 1971 proof set mintage of approximately 3.22 million establishes the theoretical maximum population. The five documented RPM varieties for the 1971-S proof dime — spanning east, tilted, and other directional classifications — demonstrate that the manual mintmark application process generated consistent variety diversity year after year across the San Francisco Mint's die preparation operation.
