Description

Opening the VarietyVista repunched mintmark catalog for the 1971-D Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-001 documents a business strike with a tilted mintmark displacement — D/D Tilted — on an obverse die classified as ODV-027, the variant without a re-engraved bowtie on Lincoln's portrait. The ODV distinction is significant for 1971-D attribution: ODV-027 dies show Lincoln's bowtie in its original hub configuration, while ODV-028 dies display a bowtie that was manually re-engraved on the working die, providing a macro-level die identification marker visible even without examining the mintmark area. Cataloged with die markers UVC-946 and DMR-002, this variety tracks through three die stages. Stage A at Early Die State captures the tilted D repunching at its sharpest and most diagnostic. Stage B at Early-Mid Die State introduces a secondary attribution marker: a die gouge beneath the C of CENT on the reverse, providing confirmation of the specific die pair independent of the mintmark repunching. By Stage C at Late Die State, cumulative striking has advanced die fatigue across both surfaces. The 1971-D date's mintage of approximately 2.91 billion cents — one of the highest single-year outputs from any Mint facility — required the consumption of an enormous number of working dies, each receiving its D mintmark through the hand-punching process that would remain standard practice through 1989. RPM-001's tilted displacement reflects the rotational variability inherent in hand-punching, where the technician's grip and angle could shift between successive blows.
