1971-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1971-D $1 WDDO-002, this Eisenhower Dollar exhibits Class II spread towards the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and slightly on the letters of LIBERTY — a convergent doubling pattern characteristic of Distorted Hub Doubling where the secondary hub impression shifted inward. Obverse die markers include two die scratches running northeast from above the E in WE, a die scratch running from northwest to southeast inside the D of GOD, and a die scratch running from west-northwest to east-southeast above the mintmark — three orientation-specific marks that fingerprint this obverse die with precision. The reverse of this variety is notably a specimen of the scarce "Four Island" variety, an unusual reverse die feature, accompanied by a die scratch running south-southwest from between the bottoms of the A and T in STATES. No additional cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar was the inaugural issue of the Eisenhower Dollar series, struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (outer layers of 75% copper/25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core) weighing 22.68 grams with a diameter of 38.1 mm. Frank Gasparro designed both the obverse portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the reverse Apollo 11 insignia eagle landing on the Moon. The Class II center-directed spread on IGWT is the primary diagnostic, with the doubling most visible on the taller letters where even subtle inward displacement produces measurable separation between primary and secondary images. The "Four Island" reverse adds significant collector interest beyond the obverse doubling variety itself.
