Description
Struck during the first year of Eisenhower Dollar production, this 1971-D obverse rim cud captures a die failure on Frank Gasparro's portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The rim cud represents the loss of part of the obverse die's rim gutter, which appears on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The Eisenhower Dollar debuted in 1971 as the first dollar coin produced since the Peace Dollar series ended in 1935, making die varieties from this inaugural year historically noteworthy. Denver Mint struck the majority of circulation Eisenhower Dollars, and the large 38.1mm diameter placed considerable stress on the dies during striking, contributing to die failures including rim cuds. This obverse cud is cross-referenced with CU-100c-1971D-03R, a reverse rim cud from the same date and mint, forming a documented pair of obverse and reverse die breaks on first-year Ike Dollars. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, which systematically records rim cud varieties across all United States coin denominations.
