1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-053
ErrorDescription
Small Date companion to the replacement WDDO-053 listing, this entry documents the same doubled die variety — reassigned after the original WDDO-053 was found to duplicate WDDO-018 — on a die prepared from the 1970-S Small Date hub. Submitted by Keith Christenson, this variety preserves the same doubling characteristics and die marker constellation as its Large Date counterpart: doubling above the 7 and below L in LIBERTY, with an extensive network of die scratches and gouges across both surfaces. The obverse carries east-west scratches through the upper 7, north-south scratches through IN GOD, die dents at the rim above TRUST, a northeast-southwest scratch below the bust, and northwest-southeast scratches through the vest. On the reverse, east-west scratches predominate throughout, joined by strong scratches left of the statue's head, a directional scratch in the lower fifth bay, north-south scratches through ME in AMERICA, gouges between I and T of UNITED and at the rim above E in AMERICA, and a gouge between R and I of PLURIBUS. The Small Date hub's uniformly aligned digit tops provide the baseline against which the doubled above-7 evidence is measured. Catalog number reassignments require collectors to verify whether references to "WDDO-053" in older publications describe the original (now-defunct) listing or this replacement variety. Christenson's submission and thorough die marker documentation help establish a clear identity for the replacement entry independent of its inherited catalog number. A die gouge is present between the upper I and T in UNITED. A die gouge is present at the rim above the right side of the E in AMERICA. A small die gouge is present between the upper R and I in PLURIBUS.
