1970 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under the designation 1970 10c WDDR-004 with no other known cross-references, this doubled die reverse on a 1970 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime exhibits a close Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 6 o'clock, affecting USA, the torch flame, and slightly showing on ONE DIME. Class V doubling results from a pivoted hub impression where the hub rotated slightly around a fixed point during the second hubbing, creating spread that increases with distance from the pivot — in this case, the pivot at the bottom of the die means elements near the top (like USA and the torch) show more spread than those near the bottom (like ONE DIME, which shows only slight doubling). Reverse die markers include a vertical die scratch to the right of the lower second S in STATES and a die scratch running south from the olive located north of the PL in PLURIBUS, while no obverse markers were noted. The 1970 Roosevelt Dime was struck during the early clad era, five years after the transition from 90% silver to copper-nickel composition under the Coinage Act of 1965. John Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime reverse, with its torch, olive branch, and oak branch design, has been in continuous production since 1946, and the detailed torch flame is particularly sensitive to rotational doubling.
