1970 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1970 10c WDDR-003 with no other known cross-references, this 1970 Roosevelt Dime exhibits a Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately the 6 o'clock position, affecting the letters USA, the torch flame, and slightly the denomination ONE DIME. Class V doubled dies result from a pivoted hub impression where the second hubbing rotated around a fixed point, producing spread that increases with distance from the pivot — in this case, the design elements nearest the top of the coin show the greatest displacement. Reverse die markers include a short die gouge extending east-northeast from the top of the second T in STATES, along with numerous north-south die scratches found to the right of the torch flame and running through the word OF. No significant obverse markers were noted. The 1970 Roosevelt Dime was the first year produced entirely in copper-nickel clad composition without any silver proof counterpart (the silver-clad proof was discontinued after 1964), and Philadelphia struck approximately 345.6 million for circulation. The torch design on the Roosevelt Dime reverse — symbolizing liberty — provides a vertical reference element where clockwise rotational spread becomes visible as displacement of the flame tips relative to the torch shaft.
