Description

First in the VarietyVista repunched mintmark catalog for the 1970-D Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-001 is documented under UVC-934 and DMR-002, establishing its position early in the known die marriage roster for this date. Because Denver hand-punched its D mintmark into each working die individually during this period, positional inconsistencies between the initial and corrective punch impressions were unavoidable — and RPM-001 preserves one such misalignment as a permanent feature of its die. Three die states trace the die's progression from initial service through terminal decline. Stage A presents Early Die State characteristics, though this stage remains unconfirmed, suggesting few specimens from the die's earliest impressions have been identified and plated. Stage B advances both surfaces to Late-Mid Die State, where obverse and reverse exhibit the cumulative effects of sustained production — softening of fine design details, light flow lines in the fields, and the gradual buildup of die fatigue that accompanies hundreds of thousands of striking cycles. The terminal Stage C is defined by a dramatic obverse diagnostic: a die crack extends from Lincoln's head to the rim, threading through the W of WE in IN GOD WE TRUST. This crack places Stage C firmly in Late Die State territory, and the reverse corroborates with its own LDS characteristics. The head-to-rim die crack provides an unmistakable marker for late-state specimens, making Stage C the most readily identifiable die state for this variety. Collectors seeking to plate all three stages will find the unconfirmed Stage A the most challenging acquisition.
