Description

Documented by VarietyVista under internal tracking code UVC-443 and die marriage reference DMR-003, this 1970-D Jefferson Nickel displays a D/D Rotated CW (clockwise) repunched mintmark — meaning the initial D punch was applied with a slight clockwise rotational offset from the final corrected position, creating overlapping letter impressions where one D appears slightly rotated relative to the other. Rotational repunched mintmarks produce a distinctive visual signature because different portions of the secondary D show varying degrees of separation from the primary letter, with some areas of the two impressions converging while others diverge. Die stage documentation tracks three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C where both obverse and reverse reach late die state. The progression through all three states without specific die markers noted at intermediate stages suggests the variety's primary diagnostic remains the rotated mintmark itself rather than any progressive die crack or chip development. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1970, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Repunched mintmark varieties from the Denver Mint during the late 1960s and early 1970s document the final decades of hand-punched mintmark application, a practice that was eventually replaced by including the mintmark in the master die beginning in 1990 for most denominations.
