Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-530 with die marriage reference DMR-003, the 1969-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001 is a proof Roosevelt Dime featuring an S/S West repunched mintmark — where the initial S mintmark was placed slightly too far east, and the corrective second punch shifted the final S westward, leaving traces of the original impression visible to the east of the primary letter. The die state documentation lists Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B as mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C as late die state (unconfirmed). The RPM-001 designation as the primary catalog entry for 1969-S dime repunched mintmarks indicates this was either the first documented or the most visually prominent example discovered for this date and mint combination. The 1969-S proof Roosevelt Dime was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the second year of resumed proof set production following the 1965-1967 Special Mint Set hiatus, a period when collectors eagerly returned to purchasing annual proof sets after a three-year gap. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime with its obverse portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and its torch-and-branches reverse symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength. Struck in clad composition (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel outer layers over pure copper) weighing 2.27 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter, this proof coin's polished surfaces provide an optimal viewing medium for repunched mintmark diagnostics, as the secondary S impression stands in clear relief against the mirror-like field surrounding the mintmark area. The westward directional shift distinguishes this variety from the other directional and tilted RPMs cataloged for the 1969-S proof dime.
