Description

One of the most visually distinctive RPM varieties for the 1969-D Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-008 is attributed by VarietyVista with UVC-928 and DMR-009, and carries the notation D/D Rotated CCW — meaning the D mint mark was punched twice with the second impression rotated counterclockwise relative to the first. Rotated RPMs are particularly prized by variety collectors because the angular displacement between primary and secondary punch impressions creates a more dramatic and immediately recognizable doubled image than simple directional shifts (north, south, east, or west). Three die stages document an increasingly complex deterioration history: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early-mid die state (EMDS), representing the freshest condition. Stage B reveals die scratches running southwest through RTY of LIBERTY on the obverse (MDS) and a light die clash under the left base of the Memorial on the reverse (MDS) — the clash indicating that the dies struck each other without a planchet during this stage. Stage C shows further progression with a light die clash from the vest to the 1 in the date on the obverse (LDS) and a light double die clash under the left base of the Memorial on the reverse (LDS), the term "double die clash" indicating that the dies clashed on at least two separate occasions, leaving overlapping transferred impressions. The development of die clashes in Stages B and C adds considerable interest to specimens from these later states. Struck at the Denver Mint on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
