Description

Carrying the primary WRPM-001 designation from the Wexler Team, this 1969-D Jefferson Nickel preserves the most prominent — or earliest discovered — repunched mintmark variety for the date and mint. The late 1960s represented a period of transition for American coinage: the Coinage Act of 1965 had already removed silver from dimes and quarters and reduced it in half dollars, and mint date freezing during 1965-1967 had disrupted the normal year-by-year progression that variety collectors rely upon. By 1969, standard dating had resumed, and Denver was striking nickels bearing their actual production year once again. Each working die continued to receive its D mintmark through individual hand-punching beside Monticello on Felix Schlag's reverse, and WRPM-001 captures one instance where the initial punch required correction. As the primary variety, WRPM-001 serves as the reference point for any additional 1969-D RPMs discovered subsequently, and its low catalog number typically indicates either pronounced repunching or early identification by researchers. The 1969-D nickel circulated widely, making examples available for examination at modest cost in circulated grades.
