1968 (S) Proof Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004 / DDR-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-001 with marker codes UVC-518 and DMR-009 and by Wexler as WDDR-004, this doubled die reverse on the 1968-S proof Roosevelt dime is cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-801. Wexler describes a strong Class I clockwise spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DIME, the flames atop the torch, the bottoms of both branches, and the outermost olive and oak branches and leaves. On the obverse one scratch runs SW from the right underside of the crossbar of the T in LIBERTY and another heads south off the Y's right fork. The reverse is a Type 1, with two short north-south scratches between the I and T of UNITED, low on those letters. Kevin Flynn submitted the coin. Wexler cross-references it as CONECA 1-R-I and writes the Cherrypickers number as FS-10-1968S-801 (020.3). VarietyVista, crediting Delma K. Romines with the report, describes a strong spread on ONE DIME, E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF, notched corners on AMERICA, and splits in both branch stems and in the flame tips. It gives the reverse as its design variety RDV-001 (weak flame) and notes that the obverse is listed as its DDO-007. Of its three stages, Stage A (early die state) and Stage C (late die state) are unconfirmed; at Stage B the reverse is in a middle die state, paired with the DDO-007 obverse, also middle.
