Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-001 with the Universal Variety Code UVC-518 and Die Marker Record DMR-009, and cross-referenced as FS-801 (Fivaz-Stanton), this is one of the most significant doubled die reverse varieties in the Roosevelt dime series. It appears on a 1968-S proof Roosevelt dime struck at the San Francisco Mint. The Roosevelt dime, introduced in 1946, was redesigned for clad composition beginning in 1965, with the 1968-S proof struck in copper-nickel clad weighing 2.27 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter. The doubling on DDR-001 is strong and widespread, affecting UNITED STATES OF, ONE DIME, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with notched corners visible on AMERICA. Both branch stems and the flame tips of the torch also show splits from the doubled hub impression. The FS-801 cross-reference in the Cherrypickers' Guide confirms this as a recognized and actively collected variety. The reverse is identified as RDV-001, the weak flame design variety, and notably the obverse die is listed as DDO-007, making this a dual doubled die coin where both obverse and reverse dies exhibit hub doubling. Multiple die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with the reverse in mid die state and the obverse listed as DDO-007 in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The combination of FS-801 recognition, strong doubling across multiple design elements, and dual DDO/DDR status makes the 1968-S DDR-001 one of the premier variety targets for Roosevelt dime collectors seeking coins with established market recognition and collector demand.
