1967 SMS Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Among the most sought-after doubled die varieties of the Special Mint Set era, the 1967 Washington Quarter WDDO-002 is found in 1967 Special Mint Sets and shows a strong Class I counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, the lower queue of Washington's hair, and his eyelid. Cross-references are CONECA 2-O-I and Cherrypickers FS-25-1967-101. No proofs were struck in 1965 through 1967; Special Mint Sets took their place, and coins of those years carry no mint mark. Obverse die markers are not noted as significant; the reverse carries a die scratch running SW to NE from the A to the T in STATES, and a small die gouge appears as a dot inside the upper D of UNITED.
