Description
A Special Mint Set (SMS) Washington quarter from 1967, produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the special sets issued from 1965 to 1967 in lieu of traditional proof sets and uncirculated mint sets. SMS coins exhibit a finish between that of business strikes and proofs, with somewhat mirrored fields and sharper detail than regular circulation issues. The copper-nickel clad composition was new for 1967, replacing the 90% silver alloy used through 1964. The obverse features John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington, while the reverse shows a heraldic eagle.
