Description

Light triple spread — three distinct impressions rather than the usual two — on the stars under STATES OF AMERICA, the lower letters of AMERICA, and the stars between the rays marks this as an unusually complex doubled die reverse for the 1964 proof Kennedy Half Dollar. The ODV-002/RDV-002 (Flared G) die pairing identifies specific obverse and reverse die varieties, with the "Flared G" designation referring to a known serif characteristic on the G of the reverse inscription. VarietyVista catalogs this under UVC-481 with DMR-064, placing it at Stage A in Early Die State where die scratches on the rim under HALF confirm the early stage, and the obverse is also in EDS. Stages B and C (MDS and LDS) remain unconfirmed. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar is one of the most intensely studied dates in all of U.S. numismatics — struck in 90% silver, the only year Kennedy halves were made in that composition for circulation, and produced in enormous quantities as the public hoarded them following President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963. Twenty-one documented doubled die reverses for 1964 alone testify to the extraordinary level of research applied to this date. Proof specimens were struck at Philadelphia, receiving multiple impressions from polished dies that make the triple spread particularly visible under magnification.
