Description

VarietyVista documents this proof-only doubled die reverse on the 1964 Kennedy half dollar as UVC-467 with die marriage reference DMR-060, paired with the ODV-002/RDV-002 die combination known as the "Flared G" variety. Medium hub doubling spreads across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the stars beneath those letters, the stars between the heraldic eagle's rays, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the stars behind the eagle's head — an unusually broad distribution of affected design elements. Three die stages document the progression: Stage A shows both sides in early die state, Stage B advances both to mid-die-state, and Stage C reveals die scratches around the entire reverse rim with both obverse and reverse reaching late die state. The 1964 Kennedy half dollar debuted just months after President Kennedy's assassination, and the proof issue — struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver — drew intense collector demand. Gilroy Roberts' obverse and Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse carried enormous emotional weight, and the Mint produced nearly 4 million proof specimens. The "Flared G" designation refers to a distinctive die characteristic on the G in GOD on the obverse, adding another layer of attribution to an already complex die marriage.
