Description

Among the most complex doubled die reverses in the inaugural Kennedy Half Dollar series, this 1964 Proof DDR-018 exhibits medium triple spread on the stars clockwise from the K-6 to K-12 position (using clock-face notation for the heraldic eagle's star arrangement). Light spread also appears on HALF, UNITED STATES, the stars between the eagle's rays, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The triple spread — three distinct hub impressions on a single die — is considerably rarer than standard doubled dies and produces a layered appearance on the affected stars that is diagnostically distinctive. This proof coin is classified with obverse design variety ODV-002 and reverse design variety RDV-001, the Straight G configuration. Three die stages are tracked under catalog codes UVC-466 and DMR-059. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B confirms both the reverse and obverse in mid-die state. Stage C also confirms both sides in late die state. 1964 is the only year Kennedy halves were struck in 90% silver for circulation; 90% silver proofs were struck again from 1992 to 2018. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-018 stands out for its triple-spread stars, which demand examination across the K-6 to K-12 arc where the three overlapping impressions are strongest.
