Description

Light triple spread appears on the stars under the letters OF AMERICA, with medium double spread on the remaining stars in the circle and the stars above E PLURIBUS UNUM, plus light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the banner on this 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-325, DMR-039, the die is paired with obverse ODV-002/RDV-002 (Flared G). Three die stages are documented: Stage A shows a die scratch on the rim above the T of UNITED at EDS, with obverse at EDS; Stage B brings reverse and obverse to MDS; Stage C reaches LDS for both. The triple spread on the star cluster beneath OF AMERICA is the strongest diagnostic, as the three distinct impressions visible on individual stars confirm this is not merely double but triple die contact. The Flared G obverse designation refers to a characteristic serif extension on the G in IN GOD WE TRUST. As a first-year proof Kennedy Half Dollar struck on 90% silver, this variety occupies a position of significance among Kennedy series specialists who pursue the 1964 proofs, the only 90% silver Kennedy proofs before silver proof sets began in 1992.
