Description

Light triple spread on the lower stars in the presidential seal circle combined with double spread on the upper stars and notched serifs on most letters of STATES OF AMERICA makes this ninth DDR for the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar a complex multi-layered variety. Struck as a Proof with the ODV-002/RDV-002 (Flared G) die pairing, this coin belongs to the subset of first-year Kennedy halves produced for collector sets at Philadelphia. Die stage documentation under UVC-038 and DMR-038 tracks three states: Stage A with reverse and obverse in Early to Mid-Die State, Stage B at Mid-Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State. The triple spread on lower stars indicates three distinct hub impressions rather than the more common two, creating an unusually complex layered appearance. Notched serifs on the lettering provide an additional diagnostic where the letter stroke endings show stepped or split terminations from the overlapping hub impressions. Cataloged by VarietyVista, nine DDRs for the 1964 date reflects intensive die variety research on the first-year Kennedy Half Dollar, a 90% silver issue that attracted immediate public demand as a memorial to President Kennedy just months after his assassination in November 1963.
