1964 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003 / DDR-008

Description

DDR-008, which Wexler numbers WDDR-003, is a doubled die reverse on the 1964 Roosevelt dime with medium spread on the lettering around the rim, the tips of the flame and the right-hand leaves, lightest on ONE. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-802; Wexler writes it FS-10-1964-802 (018.3). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a Class I counterclockwise spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the flames atop the torch, the outermost oak leaves and ONE DIME, with the heaviest spread across the right half of the reverse. John A. Wexler submitted it, and CONECA lists it as 8-R-I. Wexler follows three stages on each side. Obverse stage A has a blunt-tailed 9 and strong clash marks on the upper nose. Obverse stage B is a new obverse die, again with a blunt-tail 9, plus a SSW/NNE scratch lying right of, and below, the second T in TRUST and further scratches elsewhere on the obverse; obverse stage C matches stage B. Reverse stage A shows a short gouge heading WSW from inside the A of STATES at its lower right leg and many fine north-south scratches; reverse stage B adds a gouge between the upper parts of the D and I in DIME and heavier scratches; reverse stage C has tripled clash marks running through PLU of PLURIBUS. VarietyVista credits Joe Feld with the report. It gives the stage B through D obverse as ODV-011 (blunt 9) and leaves the stage A obverse code open (ODV-00?). Under UVC-441 and DMR-016, stage A has the reverse in a very early die state, a clash on the bridge of the nose with the obverse in a middle state, and heavy obverse scratches. Under UVC-442 and DMR-017, stage B has the reverse in an early state and a changed obverse die, noted as middle. Stage C shows a clash through E PLU of PLURIBUS and scratches around the profile, both early. Stage D, in a middle state, shows a triple clash through E PLU, a crack from the second leaf to the rim through the E of UNITED, a scratch through the 4 of the date and a scratch running southwest from the front hairline. VarietyVista has not confirmed a late stage E.
