Assigned the twelfth Wexler doubled die obverse number in the Proof-prefixed title series for the 1964 Lincoln cent, this variety represents one of the numerous hub doubling occurrences across the proof die pairs manufactured at the Philadelphia Mint that year. Prior to the adoption of single-squeeze hubbing presses in the 1990s, creating a working die required multiple impressions from the master hub, with an annealing step between each application to soften the die steel for the next squeeze. If the die blank shifted in its holder, the press ram did not seat identically, or the hub itself moved even fractionally between impressions, the result was a doubled die. The 1964 proof mintage of 3,950,762 cents required over a thousand individual die pairs, each manufactured through this inherently imperfect multi-step process.
