Description

Combining doubled die obverse doubling with the desirable "Flared G" obverse design variant, the 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-031 shows medium spread on LIBERTY and the adjacent hair detail, with lighter spread extending to IN GOD. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-358 with die marriage DMR-046, the variety appears on proof coins featuring ODV-002 and RDV-002 — the Flared G design variant where the tail of the G in GOD flares outward more prominently than the standard design. Both obverse and reverse are documented in early die state (Stage A), with Stages B and C unconfirmed. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar holds extraordinary numismatic significance as the first-year issue honoring President Kennedy following his assassination in November 1963 — the coin was rushed into production by January 1964, and the proof issue in 90% silver was struck at Philadelphia in unprecedented quantities as the public stockpiled them as memorial keepsakes. Gilroy Roberts created the obverse portrait from existing inaugural medal designs, while Frank Gasparro designed the heraldic eagle reverse. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm. Examine LIBERTY and the hair for medium spread, and verify the Flared G on the tail of G in GOD — combining DDO attribution with the collectible design variant.
