Description

Tenth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar, DDO-010 presents a complex doubling profile: light triple spread on IN GOD and the 1 of the date, combined with double spread on WE TRUST, the 4 of the date, and the Y of LIBERTY. The distinction between triple and double spread across different design elements reveals that this hub doubling involved at least three separate hub impressions with incrementally different alignments — an unusual circumstance that creates layered rather than simple bifurcated doubling on the affected letters and numerals. The VarietyVista catalog assigns UVC-015 and DMR-015, with Stage A and Stage B both confirmed (Early and Mid Die State with obverse and reverse documented at each), while Stage C remains unconfirmed. The comments identify this as a proof issue struck from the Accented Hair obverse die variety (ODV-001) paired with the Straight G reverse die variety (RDV-001). The Accented Hair variety is itself a notable Kennedy Half Dollar collectible — a die featuring stronger hair detail on Kennedy's portrait that was used early in 1964 proof production before being replaced with the Modified design. Finding a doubled die on an Accented Hair proof die adds a layer of significance that elevates this variety's appeal among Kennedy Half specialists. The 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar was struck on 90% silver planchets during the first year of the series, and the tremendous public demand for these coins — driven by national mourning for President Kennedy — resulted in proof mintages exceeding 3.9 million sets.
