1964 Variety WMDR-001

Description

While most doubled die varieties trace to a single working die receiving misaligned hubbing, WMDR-001 on the 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar originated much higher in the production chain: at the reverse master die. The master die is the original from which all working hubs are derived, and when it receives a misaligned impression, the doubling propagates through every subsequent generation of tooling. The Wexler Team identified this variety as Wexler Variety ID 1964 50¢ WMDR-001, the first documented master die doubling reverse for the Kennedy Half's inaugural year. Frank Gasparro's reverse — featuring the heraldic eagle adapted from the Presidential Seal — was created under intense time pressure after President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, and the urgency may have contributed to anomalies at the master die level. Because the doubling was embedded in the master die, it transferred to every working hub and every working die produced from those hubs, making the variety potentially widespread across the 1964 Proof mintage of 3.95 million pieces. Identifying WMDR-001 requires recognizing the consistent, systemic nature of the doubling rather than die-specific diagnostics.
