1964 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Showing a D/D displacement to the northwest, this 1964-D Jefferson Nickel RPM-007 is cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-1739 and DMR-017. The northwest direction distinguishes it from RPM-006's eastward displacement, confirming these are separate die pairs with different punch misalignment orientations. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at Denver during the final year before the Coinage Act of 1965, the 1964-D nickel saw massive production volumes as the Mint built up circulating coin stocks. Seven documented RPMs for a single date and mint reflects both the enormous number of die pairs consumed and the systematic examination applied to this historically significant final pre-transition date. Die progression documentation tracks the variety through multiple die states. The northwest displacement means the initial D punch landed southeast of the intended position, with the corrective strike producing the overlapping impression visible under magnification. Repunched mintmarks on 1964-D nickels document the hand-punching process at the very end of an era when this manual technique was standard practice at branch mint facilities.
