1964 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Featured in the Cherrypickers Guide as FS-501, RPM-005 is the primary Cherrypickers-listed repunched mintmark for the 1964-D Jefferson Nickel — a meaningful distinction that places this variety among the most collectible RPMs in the series. The mintmark shows a D/D South repunch, with the secondary impression displaced below the final mintmark position. Catalogued UVC-431 and DMR-006, three die stages are documented: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid die state), and Stage C (late die state). The 1964-D Jefferson Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel at the Denver Mint under Felix Schlag's design. South-direction repunches arise when the initial punch contacts the die too far south before repositioning upward to the accepted location. The FS-501 Cherrypickers listing confirms this variety's significance within the broader Jefferson Nickel RPM reference literature, and its inclusion in that guide has made it a well-known target for variety specialists searching circulated 1964-D rolls and dealer stock.
