1964-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-429 and DMR-004, the 1964-D RPM-003 Jefferson Nickel preserves a repunched mintmark where the Denver D was struck into the working die at least twice, leaving overlapping impressions that reveal the manual nature of mintmark application during this era. Three documented die stages trace the working die from its earliest use through terminal deterioration: Stage A represents the early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B shows both the reverse and obverse reaching mid-die-state (MDS) with balanced wear across the die faces, and Stage C captures late die state (LDS, unconfirmed) where accumulated striking stress had degraded the die surfaces significantly. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel in 1938 after winning a public design competition, and his original Monticello reverse remained in production through 2003. The 1964-D nickel was struck at the Denver Mint in standard copper-nickel composition — 75% copper and 25% nickel — weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. The 1964 date marked one of the highest mintage years in the series as the U.S. Mint ramped up production ahead of the Coinage Act of 1965, which removed silver from dimes and quarters and drove hoarding of older coins. Repunched mintmark varieties from the Jefferson Nickel series are actively collected because the large D mintmark on the reverse, positioned to the right of Monticello, provides a clear field for examining punch displacement under moderate magnification. Collectors should focus on the serifs and curves of the D letter where remnants of the initial misplaced punch are most visible against the secondary, corrected impression.
