1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

This 1963 proof Roosevelt Dime is a COMBO variety pairing WDDO-004 on the obverse with WDDR-004 on the reverse, making it doubled on both sides of the coin. The obverse exhibits a clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 4:00, visible on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, and the hair at the top of Roosevelt's head. The reverse is also a doubled die, cataloged as WDDR-004 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files. A Class I clockwise spread shows as notches on the upper letters of USA and the lower letters of ONE DIME, with light doubling on E PLU. A die gouge on the upper left E in DIME serves as a reverse die marker. Struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint, the 1963 proof dime was among the final silver proof issues before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating coinage. COMBO varieties carrying doubled dies on both obverse and reverse are uncommon and particularly prized by specialists, as they document two separate hubbing errors preserved in a single die pair. The dual attribution elevates this coin well above typical single-side doubled die proof dimes from the early 1960s.
