1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1962 25c WDDO-002, this Washington Silver Quarter shows a clockwise (CW) spread from a pivot point at approximately 1:00 on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, and the bottom of the ribbon beneath George Washington's bust. Pivoted hub doubling occurs when the hub rotates slightly between impressions during die manufacture, producing spread that radiates outward from the pivot point — elements near the pivot show minimal displacement while those farther away exhibit progressively wider separation. Die markers on the obverse include a die chip between the numeral 2 and the rim, plus a die crack running across the base of the bust. The reverse carries its own die crack running down the eagle's right wing. No other cross-references are currently known. The 1962 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter was struck during the final years of the 90% silver composition that would end with the Coinage Act of 1965, making all pre-1965 Washington Quarters inherently valuable for their precious metal content beyond any variety premium. The combination of specific die cracks on both sides provides multiple diagnostic features for attribution, allowing collectors to confirm this variety even when the doubling is subtle.
