1962 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007
Error
Description
Light spread on the numeral 1 of the date combined with rotational spread on TRUST identifies this seventh documented doubled die obverse for the 1962 Philadelphia Mint Washington Silver Quarter. Tracked by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-1013 and DMR-013, the die progressed through three stages: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B in mid-die state (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The combination of linear spread on the date digit with rotational spread on the motto suggests a complex hub misalignment — possibly involving both lateral shift and slight rotation between hubbing impressions — producing different spread characteristics on different parts of the die. The 1962 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver composition during the penultimate production year of silver quarters, and the looming transition to clad coinage in 1965 would make all pre-1965 silver quarters intrinsically valuable for their metal content. John Flanagan's Washington portrait had been the standard quarter design for thirty years by 1962, and the mature tooling and well-established production methods make the presence of seven documented DDO varieties notable. Rotational spread on TRUST is best detected by examining the letter serifs under magnification for directional notching.
