1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-017
Error
Description
Closing out the currently documented repunched mintmark catalog for the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, RPM-017 is classified as a D/D/D North, East variety — a triple-punched mintmark in which the "D" was impressed into the die at least three times, with the secondary and tertiary impressions displaced to the north and to the east of the final accepted position. Triple-punched mintmarks are less commonly encountered than simple double-punched examples because the die technician typically corrected the alignment after the first errant punch, making a third distinct impression relatively unusual. The triple displacement creates a more complex visual signature under magnification: rather than a single shadow alongside the primary "D," collectors will observe remnants from two offset impressions, each at a different angle, producing a layered effect that can be quite striking at 10x or higher. This variety carries VarietyVista designations UVC-873 and DMR-023. Stage A records the obverse in early die state (EDS), while the reverse already shows die chips on columns #1 and lower #12 at mid-die state (MDS), an asymmetric deterioration pattern suggesting the reverse die entered service with pre-existing minor imperfections or advanced more rapidly under striking pressure. Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) are both unconfirmed, meaning that specimens from later in this die pair's production run remain unverified — an open opportunity for sharp-eyed collectors working through accumulations of 1962-D cents to contribute new die-stage documentation to the variety's record.
