1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-010
Error
Description
Cataloged as RPM-010 in the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent repunched mintmark series, this variety preserves the trace of a secondary "D" mintmark impression that was punched into the die at a slightly offset position before being corrected with the final, properly placed strike of the hand punch. Because all mintmarks on circulating coinage of this era were applied individually to each working die at the Philadelphia Mint before the dies were shipped to branch facilities, every Denver Mint die carried the potential for such misalignment. RPM-010 is documented under VarietyVista designations UVC-864 and DMR-014, with three stages of die life recorded. Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS), presenting the sharpest rendition of the doubled mintmark and the finest original die polish lines. Stage B reveals the onset of die deterioration: light die scratches crisscross the obverse surface — a hallmark of mid-die state (MDS) that results from repeated contact with planchets and the coin press mechanism — while the reverse has similarly advanced to MDS. Stage C is classified as late die state (LDS) but remains unconfirmed, indicating that examples from the final production run of this die pair have yet to be verified. Collectors seeking RPM-010 should examine the mintmark area under 8x to 10x magnification, looking for the telltale shadow of the secondary "D" alongside the primary impression, and can use the obverse die scratches as a cross-reference to confirm the specific die.
