1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009
Error
Description
Continuing the substantial run of repunched mintmark varieties cataloged for the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, RPM-009 documents a die on which the Denver "D" mintmark was impressed into the working die more than once at slightly different positions, leaving a visible secondary outline alongside the primary punch. The high Denver mintage of over 1.79 billion cents for 1962 demanded an enormous number of die pairs, and with each die receiving its mintmark individually by hand punch prior to production, slight misalignments between successive impressions were an inherent occupational hazard. This variety is tracked under VarietyVista catalog references UVC-863 and DMR-013, with die progression documented across multiple stages. In Stage A, both the obverse and reverse surfaces are in early-to-mid die state (EMDS), meaning the repunched mintmark appears at its clearest and the die surfaces retain sharp original detail with minimal wear. By Stage B, the obverse has progressed to mid-die state (MDS) and a depression has developed on the right cornice of the Lincoln Memorial reverse, a characteristic sign of metal fatigue in the die steel. Stage C is recorded as late die state (LDS) but remains unconfirmed, suggesting that specimens from this final stage have not yet been positively identified and represent an open attribution target for variety specialists searching through late-stage 1962-D cents.
