1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-855 / DMR-005, the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent RPM-004 has been tracked across four die stages that document the die's progression from fresh production through late-state deterioration. In Stage A, both the obverse and reverse are in early die state (EDS), with the repunched D mintmark at maximum clarity and the die faces largely unmarked. Stage B (EMDS) records the first signs of wear: the obverse has progressed slightly, a small die chip has appeared between the upper U and R of PLURIBUS on the reverse, and a light die crack has formed on column #1 of the Memorial. By Stage C (MDS), the die damage has advanced considerably — a medium die break has developed outside column #1, die chips have appeared on columns #11 and #12, and the die chip between the upper UR of PLURIBUS has grown to medium size. The terminal Stage D (LDS) shows the obverse in late die state with the die break outside column #1 having enlarged to a large break, marking the die's final phase of useful service before retirement. The column #1 break's progression from a light crack in Stage B through a medium break in Stage C to a large break in Stage D provides collectors with an exceptionally clear three-point chronological framework for sequencing individual specimens within this die's production run at the Denver Mint.
