1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003
Error
Description
A triple-punched mintmark variety, the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent RPM-003 is designated D/D/D South, North — indicating that the D mintmark was punched three times, with the secondary impression displaced to the south and a tertiary impression displaced to the north relative to the final position. This three-punch sequence, where the mintmark was repositioned twice before the final correction, makes RPM-003 one of the more complex repunched mintmark varieties in the 1962-D cent series. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-854 / DMR-004, the variety has been documented across six die stages. Stage A finds both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS). Stage B (EMDS) introduces a light north-south die crack on the forehead with the reverse still in early-to-mid condition. By Stage C (MDS), a depression has formed at the right eave tip of the Memorial. Stage D (MDS) brings a die break on column #12. Stage E (LMDS) sees the obverse in late-mid condition with a die break forming at the right eave tip. The terminal Stage F (LDS) shows the obverse in late die state with a larger die break at the right eave tip, recording the die's final phase of service. The progressive enlargement of the right eave break from Stage C through Stage F provides collectors with a particularly clear chronological marker for determining where a given specimen falls in this die's production sequence.
