1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
Identified as a D/D East repunched mintmark, the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent RPM-002 shows the secondary D mintmark displaced to the east of the primary — meaning the initial punch landed slightly to the right before the final impression corrected the position, leaving a visible remnant of the first strike protruding from the eastern edge of the primary D. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-853 / DMR-003, this variety has been tracked through four die stages spanning two reverse die pairings. Stage A shows the obverse in early die state (EDS) with a depression already visible at the right eave of the Memorial, an architectural feature that serves as an early-stage diagnostic. In Stage B (EMDS), the obverse has progressed slightly and a light die crack has appeared on column #12 of the reverse. Stage C (MDS) brings a die chip on the right cornice as the die continues to deteriorate. The die history then records a significant production event: the reverse die was changed, creating a new pairing documented as UVC-3117 / DMR-026. In Stage D, the obverse is in late die state (LDS) while the replacement reverse begins in mid-die state (MDS), a common pattern when an obverse die outlasts its initial reverse partner and is matched with a fresher reverse to continue production. The eastward direction of the repunching, combined with the documented reverse die change, gives RPM-002 a particularly rich attribution profile for specialists tracking Denver Mint die usage during the 1962 production year.
